Houghton Lake, Michigan Activities

This idyllic area in Northern Michigan is ideal for a vast array of recreational activities, especially in the summer. Fishing. In Roscommon County you will find great fishing on all three of our county lakes-Houghton Lake, Higgins Lake and Lake St. Helen. Fishing abounds for a variety of species including Lake Trout, Perch, Crappie, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Walleye, Northern Pike and Bluegill.

Canoeing. Enjoy some of the finest canoeing, kayaking and tubing in the world. Float the Muskegon River, the Cut River and the South Branch of the world famous AuSable River. Each of these rivers has its own unique characteristic, but all of them gently take you through the cool shaded forests in and near Crawford & Roscommon Counties.  [Top]

Boating
Here are a few of the many marinas in the area for boat and ski boat rentals.

B & B Boat Rental. Pontoon boats, ski boats, fishing boats and wave runners can be rented at this marina one mile east of the North State Park on the North Shore of Higgins Lake. For more information, call 989-821-6549.

Lyman’s on the Lake. This marina offers a variety of baits, lures, underwater cameras, walleye and bluegill supplies and line reels. For more information, call 989-422-3231.

Edgewater Beach Marina. Pontoon, ski boats, fishing boats, Yamaha PWC rentals and paddle boats are on hand. Plus, there are boat slip rentals and they offer winter storage for boats and the use of their boat launch. For more information, call 989-422-4221.  [Top]

Hiking
Lost Twin Lake Trail. This 3-mile loop trail winds through an old growth pine forest and contains scenic overviews of pristine wetlands areas. Designed for hiking and cross-country skiing, this trail has several bridges, including a covered bridge.

Red Pine Natural Area. This exceptionally picturesque area features 1.5 miles that are perfect for hiking, biking and skiing. There is also an interpretive foot trail.

Tisdale Triangle. Woodland areas of natural-groomed trails, the Tisdale Triangle is located one-half mile from Roscommon. This stretch of trail is 8.5 miles and designed for mountain biking, hiking and cross-country skiing.
